Tried to log in to an old gmail account. Remembered my password perfectly. But it asked for a confirmation code from an old phone number I no longer have (something it never did before). No alternative recovery options. This is why I keep shilling decentralized social recovery.

Sad to hear that. What about the alternate email ? Can that not be used for recovery ? I remember all gmail accounts are required to be linked with alternate emails.

Of course, if the user kept it up to date, just like they should have with the phone number. 2FA adds another option, but only if the user keeps it up to date.
