Tried to log in to an old gmail account. Remembered my password perfectly. But it asked for a confirmation code from an old phone number I no longer have (something it never did before). No alternative recovery options.

This is why I keep shilling decentralized social recovery.

Great point V. Maybe they should just do away with recovery options and provide every account its own Ethereum address and use that to authenticate. Or something online these lines.

Or the user can just take care of their recovery settings, or add 2FA... and then make sure that they of course take care of the 2FA method!
