Tried to log in to an old gmail account. Remembered my password perfectly. But it asked for a confirmation code from an old phone number I no longer have (something it never did before). No alternative recovery options. This is why I keep shilling decentralized social recovery.

I always face this problem when I move to another country and do not change the confirmation number. So I used to add more than one way to confirm, but it is not an absolute solution.

Unrelated 2FA is the way, then you will not be asked for verification, as the 2FA takes care of that. I love my Yubikeys! I have several, and I add them all to wherever it's possible, and then I also add Authy.

The plan is to NOT ever lose access to my primary accounts, as those are used as recovery email for everything that doesn't offer 2FA!
