Just thinking. Why would you need your own protocol? What's the advantage of owning it?

because its the only place in the stack to differentiate, with a reasonably defensible moat once proven successful, whatever you do with product can (and will) be easily copied by someone with more distribution easy to fork a protocol, much harder to fork its network
