ELI5 difference between zk and optimistic rollups

Zk - blocks are valid when submitted
Op - blocks are valid after submission and nobody challenges them for long enough

Interested in ZK, FHE, PUFs, hardware, system design, ai safety, and smart contact security.

are zk and op mutually exclusive? can a single L2 support both?

I don't think they are mutually exclusive. I seem to remember a project from a year or so ago that had a design that would do optimistic pre confirmations and then provers would zk prove those blocks - can't remember the name tho
