they're all still in bands, but now instead of working at a cafe, bar, or screen printing shop they work at tech cos big and small

I agree musician is still the archetype. But they still mostly do gig/shift work that provides tour flexibility. Lots end up in tech, animation, film & TV because of adjacent skills. But overall I think that’s the minority. Cost of living and jam space means you either earn more to afford habit, or do what fits in a bedroom.

the implication here is that there’s not the incentive to ‘make it’ as much anymore because the career is pretty good.
