This might be a newbie question, but what's the use of a cast hash?

i believe it's for archival purposes, warpcast only shows casts from 30 days on the feed and i think it's the historical record of the cast forever (with the details ). but not sure but you can look them up through an api via the cast hash. i only know enough to get in trouble though not to do much so idk for sure.
