Check out Dr. Mark Bailey's paper on how "virus" models are added to the NCBI's Genbank. These are used as references for detecting "pathogens" through PCR tests or metagenomic sequencing, like MetaGene-1, yet none of these models are proven to originate from actual "viruses."
