yes but no. incentives get people who are not motivated to do something instrumental to achieving the thing that actually motivates them. finding people intrinsically motivated to do a good job, especially in jobs that are not glamorous or aethetically satisfying is hard

i could also argue the opposite, though. people are intrinsically spontaneously motivated to do a good job at tasks they've accepted they have to do. people like doing a good job and find it more satisfying than doing a poor job.

True, there are people that do stuff out of passion, but a vast majority do so just to make ends meet, to get money. Some people wake up everyday, go to work, not because they fancy it, but they know it pays and to keep the job, they have to do their best. The better they are at it, the more money they get. if incentives are out of the way, your next best bet is people believing in what you’re doing. You need to be able to sell dreams.
