cymatics

Robert Hooke, an English polymath, was the first to discover and study cymatics in 1671. He’s credited for a variety of discoveries and inventions in physics, astronomy, geology, meteorology, and architecture. He was one of the first scientists to investigate living things at microscopic scale, using a compound microscope he designed himself, no less!

Cymatics were just a blip in Hooke’s prestigious career, and it wasn’t until  over 100 years later, in 1780, when experiments were continued by German physicist and musician Ernst Chladni. The Chladni plate is still used in cymatics explorations to this day. More on him and his discoveries in future posts ⚛️

After Chladni, the most notable figure to study cymatics was English scientist, Michael Faraday (yes, Faraday Cage Faraday). In fact, before Hans Jenny coined the term "cymatics", it was commonly referred to as Faraday Wave phenomena. I'll be writing some longer form pieces about Faraday's explorations soon, but for now, here's a quick snap I took of Michael Faraday's portrait at the Faraday Museum in London!
