"In 1954, pianist Dave Brubeckβs quartet was scheduled to perform at Basin Street East in New York. Each evening, saxophonist Paul Desmond asked Brubeck to schedule the concert intermission at the same time, allowing him to leave Basin Street and rush to Times Square, where Audrey Hepburn was starring in Ondine by Jean Giraudoux. Every evening, Desmond would stand by the stage door and admire Audrey Hepburn, whom he secretly loved, as she stepped into her limousine.
He never spoke to her, too shy to approach her, but he composed a beautiful minor blues in her honor. Upon Hepburnβs death, her husband asked Brubeck to perform the piece at her funeral.
