pure marketing to steer narrative away from monopoly talk and align with open-source branding. 0% of threads users care about the decentralization aspect, and the fediverse value prop is nonexistent

yep. I am extremely skeptical. And even if they ship, they are not beholden to it, and can remove at any time under the guise of “making the platform better for its users.” if they do integrate activitypub fully, it means we have no reason to use threads or their app/feed—risky business decision.
