Masks are also familiar as pieces of kit associated with practical, usually protective, functions. Such masks have recently become popular, but there is a long history of protective armor and even medical masks to ward off the plague. The contrast of performance masks is not always clear. Ceremonial and performance masks can themselves be considered functional, and protective masks, especially in a sporting context, are often designed to enhance the appearance of the wearer.
