In the end, I agree with most (maybe all) of the takes that space colonization doesn’t make economic sense.

There’s the grandiose arguments about the fragility of Earth and the need for planetary backups (the plural is important!).

If you believe life is special and worth preserving, then spreading life through the Solar System and the cosmos has to be somewhere on your priority list.

But more important than the idea of a “planetary backup” is the idea of “the frontier”.

IMHO, we have forgotten that the frontier has a social role as a place where those who don’t fit in or are unwanted can flee and build something new.

There are no frontiers left on Earth.
