Today's /allotment bounty: asparagus and spinach. 0 km distance travelled, 0 days from crop to stomach. 0 chemicals sprayed. The way nature intended. Tossed in olive oil, Himalayan salt + crushed black pepper. Bit of grated cheese on the spinach for fun. Whacked them into the oven as part of our dinner tonight. Handy tip for those growing asparagus and find them too thick: I tend to peel some of the tougher skin near the bottom then slice them in half. They end up super tender after cooking like this.

Wowow, that sounds delicious! I’m just about to start growing asparagus myself. Does it take long before it’s ready to harvest?

Thank mew, yes they are delicious! If you buy crowns and plant them (rather than from seed), you *may* be able to harvest one or two spears by the first year per crown. But generally the advice is to leave it for the first 1-2 years to grow without harvesting, so it can fatten up. I think we did harvest a few in our first year, maybe just one spear per crown, for testing. It is a long term investment, but they come back every year, and I think it's definitely worthwhile if you have the space! Bear in mind that they should be planted deep, like 50cm deep!
