Ioanna Sakellaraki «The Mark of a Terrible Sun» Ioanna Sakellaraki: The Mark of a Terrible Sun is a photographic study of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometre circular disaster zone that accounts for 90 per cent of all earthquakes and 75 per cent of all active volcanoes on the globe. Part of the project is dedicated to the lands and people in the shadow of the volcanoes located in the south-west trench of the ring, and in particular parts of the Melanesia region, including Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The series consists of analogue medium format images that have then been marked with magma stains captured digitally during the volcanic eruption, so that the final works become carriers of frozen traces of the remains of the catastrophe, serving as memorials reminding us of the fragility of life.
