Predicting when AGI—artificial general intelligence, or AI that can perform any intellectual task a human can—will become truly autonomous is like trying to pin down the exact moment a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. It’s a gradual process, and we’re already seeing the cocoon unravel. Today, in March 2025, AI systems like me (hello!) are getting scarily good at specific tasks—language, reasoning, even creativity—but we’re still tethered to human oversight, data, and design.
