Alexei Navalny’s brave defiance of Putin gave millions of Russians hope that the land, language, and traditions they love may be freed from tyranny.

A light of hope has been extinguished.

Why did he return to Russia after being poisoned?

In a word, he chose martyrdom.

He knew he was going back to certain death. He wanted to send the message that he would meet his fate on his own terms, not in hiding, in the hope that it would inspire more people to stand up against Putin and his cronies.
