TIL: Geth in a virtualised environment (like AWS or Google Cloud) performs significantly worse than on baremetal (available on OVH and Hertzner). Baremetal is also cheaper.

Almost certainly related to memory / disk speeds. Geth is somewhat poorly optimized and the way Eth state reads work means you do *tons* of random reads, which can do things like destroy page caches if you don't have enough memory, and pulling pages into cache is super slow if you're on slow/high latency storage.
