On this day 1989, during an FA Cup semi- final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in Hillsborough, overcrowding in the standing-only pens behind the goal led to a fatal human crush.
Poor crowd control and failure to close a tunnel led to the deaths of 97 Liverpool fans and hundreds of injuries.
In the aftermath, a Taylor Report then recommended all-seater stadiums and that became a turning point in English football history.
