Should your trainer be in shape?

Yes, and no

On one hand, lots of very knowledgeable people have circumstances that don’t allow them to practice what they preach: that doesn’t make their coaching any less valuable

On the other hand, it can be difficult to relate to the experience if you haven’t gone through it yourself

I’ve been on both ends of the spectrum - when I was at the peak of working with the best athletes in the world I wasn’t exactly in shape - I had low back surgery, blood clots, and a crippling undiagnosed GI disorder

But I was able to demonstrate through my words the value I provided

Recently I’ve mostly healed a lot of my health concerns, and am approaching some of the best shape of my life

That doesn’t make me any more knowledgeable and my ability to do my job hasn’t changed, but it’s certainly made it easier because clients trust me more (for the stereotypical reasons)

Context is everything, don’t judge a book by its cover, and be careful of absolutes

Trainer no need perfect shape, just good knowledge. But being fit helps trust.
