Once widespread in Southeast Asia, the critically endangered Siamese crocodile is now found in only 1% of its former range, with an estimated 250 mature individuals remaining in the wild. Thanks to a chance rediscovery in Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains, a conservation program was initiated. Despite ongoing efforts to protect 400,000 hectares of habitat, the species remains extremely rare due to habitat loss, poaching, fishing gear entanglement, and hydroelectric dam construction.ππ
