The United States remains the world's largest recipient of investments (i.e., the party receiving foreign investments) and their donor. If we take not individual European countries, but the European Union as a whole, then it will be the second recipient and donor of investments in the world. And at one time the EU was even ahead of the United States in terms of direct investment in other countries of the world. But the energy crisis and the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine hit European investment hard. The total external investments of European multinational companies decreased at the end of 2022 to $224 billion compared to $573 billion in 2021. This catastrophic decline amounted to almost $350 billion - European money, instead of going to the outside world, remained on the continent to “patch holes.”
