Ask them to describe the problem. - How often do they encounter the problem? - How painful is it? - What solutions have they tried? What was wrong with those solutions? - What other impact does the problem have? - When did they first run into this problem? - Etc... etc...

Many people make the mistake of assuming that customers know the solutions. But jumping straight to solution brainstorming with customers doesn't work. Rather, start with a deep understanding of the customer's problem.
