Harriet Tubman (1822 - 1913) She escaped slavery in 1849 and helped about 70 others escape via the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, she served as a Union scout, spy, and nurse, leading a raid that freed over 700 slaves. She later advocated for civil rights and women's suffrage.
