The power of change. I have always been a conscientious student, so at my school & college, I worked hard to hear every word the teachers said. I arrived early to position myself in a good seat that had clear sight lines for lipreading . I concentrated, I listened actively, and I took notes to solidify the concepts into my notebook for later review. It was not that effective and also exhausting. When I was exhausted, I got a strange idea that "I should try to hear less,β . βThe most important information will be repeated multiple times. Focus on that, not on getting every detail. Hearing everything would only wear me down.β But I had a thought that I could do what everyone else could do? because of my hearing loss I should lower the high expectations I had for myself to learn the material? That I should not expect to absorb the information as well as the students with typical hearing? That I was not capable of taking the class on my own terms? (1/n)
