I'm guessing it's hard to understand because the leaderboard isn't purely based on engagement but engagement that's relative to your follower count
The more followers you have the more engagement you need to climb the leaderboard and vice versa 
And I'm also guessing the engagement of high level accounts like Dan will have greater effect. Just a guess though
