Surrealism was a movement in modern art and visual literature that flourished in Europe between World Wars I and II. This movement was a reaction against the destruction caused by the "rationalism" that had previously guided European culture and politics and led to the First World War. The intellectual foundations of this movement are strongly related to the theories of Sigmund Freud. Surrealist painters used techniques to produce works of art that were original in their own way.
