What is Imposter Syndrome? Imposter Syndrome, also known as imposter phenomenon, fraud syndrome, or the impostor experience, was first identified and named by psychologists Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes in 1978. It is a cognitive distortion in which individuals who have achieved success experience persistent doubts about their abilities and fear of being exposed as a fraud. Despite their accomplishments, people with imposter syndrome often feel like impostors, frauds, or phonies. They attribute their success to luck, timing, or the help of others rather than to their own skills and efforts.
