With a GDP of 177 billion euros, Barcelona is the 4th richest city in the European Union and the 35th city in the world. Barcelona was founded as a Roman city and later became the capital of the Counts of Barcelona. After joining the Kingdom of Aragon, it was one of the important cities of the Aragon Empire.
