a small but growing part of me thinks that there needs to be something distinctly different than a) defined communities and b) simply casting to main. e.g. general topics & cities, anyone can post / join and it just defaults to some standard warpcast algo.

yup completely agreed. many useful use cases are now not possible with the removal of public channels. but i understand the spam problem. hashtags are coming back.
