(EXEMPLARY LIVES) From relegated to guarding cattle to circumventing the globe. Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. On departure, Magellan was thirty-nine and a reject of the Portuguese crown Before leaving Portugal for Spain, Magellan was an experienced explorer and soldier but not well liked by the King or his superiors. He was sent to Morocco by the King and relegated to guarding cattle after suffering a battle wound that left him with a limp. Returning to Portugal he was offered a servile position in the court. Approaching his forties, he was finished. Magellan spent the next two years studying maps and reading books. When the King refused his wish to go on an expedition to find a new route to India. Spain did not have access to spice rich India because Portugal controlled the route through Arica. He proposed getting there by going in the opposite direction. Magellan died before returning to Spain, but his voyage lives on.

(EXEMPLARY LIVES) Before deciding to become a painter, Vincent Van Gogh worked and got fired from an art dealership, worked and got fired from a job teaching at a school for boys, worked and quit a bookstore, and enrolled in a theology degree to become a pastor. He quit his theological studies to live in a mining town to preach to miners. Vincent only decided to train as a painter at 27 years old. Suffering from seizures and depression, Vincent lived a life of poverty, losing first his teeth, then his physical health, and finally his mental health. He practiced endlessly and by the end of his life had over 2,000 paintings. Of the 2,000 Vincent only sold one during his lifetime. His parents died convinced he was a failure. Vincent would shoot himself 10 years after deciding to become a painter. While life did everything in its power to convince him otherwise, it was Vincent's unshakeable belief in himself and his passion for art that allowed him to continue to push through and lead an exemplary life.

(EXEMPLARY LIVES) Imagine becoming one of the most influential English-language writers and only learning the language in your 20s. This is the life of Joseph Conrad, born Józef Korzeniowski in a town that was unwillingly part of the Russian Empire, now Ukraine, but Polish at heart. “Apocalypse Now” was inspired on a Conrad novella, and there have been at least five movie adaptations of the novel “Victory”, where he explores the murky waters of the human psyche and its limits. Born in a landlocked town, Conrad learned English so he could join the British merchant navy. His stories took place in remote and dangerous places around the world, yet his exploration of moral ambiguity and ambition, set 100 years, ago still resonate with the modern reader. Everything about Conrad's life is improbable, a Polish boy (by family) in a landlocked town, who only learned English in his 20s, becomes one of the most celebrated English-language writers. Sometimes not knowing the rules of the game has its advantages.

(EXEMPLARY LIVES) Imagine a house cat decided to explore the world. Alexander Von Humboldt might bet the most important person you've never heard of. With no formal education, he embarked on a journey to South America (30 years before Darwin), during which he connected geology, botany and meteorology to lay the groundwork for modern earth sciences. A son of a Prussian aristocrat he grew up in gilded salons and formality. Nevertheless, at 29 years old he headed for the other side of the Atlantic where he trudged through the rainforests of South America, climbed Volcanoes and chatted up locals about plant species. His meticulous observations led to the discovery of the Humboldt Current in the Pacific Ocean, crucial to our understanding of global climate patterns. With little more than courage, curiosity and a sense of adventure, he also bridged the gap between science and the public through vivid travel accounts where he shared his scientific contributions. The best way to prepare is to embark.
