Studies have shown that spending time in nature—especially in forested environments—reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormone), lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and increases the activity of the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. In addition, volatile compounds secreted by trees, called phytoncides, improve immune function and increase the number of natural killer cells (NK cells) in the body. In short, forests are not only visually beautiful, but they also synergize with the body’s biological mechanisms to bring us deeper peace
