In Spanish - “Americanos” can refer to all folks from the Americas I think - that’s why team America in the City of Mexico has a continental tilt to it I think

Gotcha, I don’t subscribe to merit salvation; but in the debate w/Luther & Erasmus, I likely side w/Erasmus where choice is a factor, seeing God’s love as a consenting relationship; I’d also suggest folks are too legally and logically fixated on justification vs gratitude to God for the present moment

What is the appeal of Calvinism for you personally? I’ve always been a little offput about predestination and I am definitely a bigger fan of free will and even universal hope (if that’s a true opposite end); I do find many Calvinists tend to be “strong Christians in action” though

I would respond by saying that even if it’s not enjoyable - the penal substitution theory implies that someone had to suffer and punished to satisfy “God’s equation” - it’s a very legalistic approach that does not seem to do justice in describing a saving of act of God and hugs the law too tightly

I would argue against what seems to be “penal substitution” that suggests God needed to hurt himself/Jesus to satisfy Justice - the East Orthodox believe Jesus defeated the law of death via his life & death - http://ww1.antiochian.org/saint-athanasius-and-%E2%80%98penal-substitutionary%E2%80%99-atonement-doctrine
