On this day in 1291, Crusader rule in the Holy Land ended as the Mamluks took the city of Acre, the last stronghold of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. 

A force of 45,000 Muslim warriors led by Sultan Al-Ashraf Khalil besieged the city, overwhelming the 15,000 Crusaders who, despite fierce resistance, were defeated.
