Been away for a week. Are channels now permission and payment gated?

Now you need to be invited to each channel to be able to cast there. Sometimes if you casted there recently you get auto-added as a member. Many have a one-click button to become a member. I haven't encountered one that I had to pay for yet.

Was this done primarily to fight bots?

Yeah. Also all the random non-channel related casting. I run the /fomo channel and I was getting inundated with garbage casts about the unaffiliated fomo token, to the point I gave up on trying to moderate. This new system has eliminated that (so far at least.)
