Mask making tradition has been practised in India for centuries. β€œMask making in Assam was initiated by Mahapurush Sankaradeva, the 15th Century saint, who introduced them in Ankia Bhaona, a traditional form of drama.

This 16th-century full-face vizard /masks was discovered in 2010 inside a wall during renovations of a 16th-century stone house in Daventry, England. It is the most intact specimen of its kind. Worn to protect the wearer’s complexion, the front is made of black velvet with three layers of pressed paper between it and a lining of white silk.

Bandari women have been wearing /masks for centuries. The roots of the tradition are unknown, although some say that it started during Portuguese rule, when women were trying to avoid recognition by slave masters looking for pretty girls.

Colonialism was not the only source of decline for early masking traditions. In many cases, the ebb and flow of civilizations has resulted in the extinction of societies that existed as independent political entities. Their cultural traditions have disappeared with them. It is likely, for example, that the peoples of East-Central Asia had developed diverse masking traditions before becoming engulfed in the great Mongol Empire under the leadership of Genghis Khan in the 12th century
