second time this week that i’ve taken a call w an external team that’s used the word “spike” to mean something like “quick sprint”. i’ve been in tech for 10yrs and had never heard the word until this week

spike is a time-boxed thing that is more of a 'will this work'

i have heard it used in the past for sure, with the meaning of a one-off / POC project that goes off of the main engineering roadmap to vet some alternate approach.

Every time I’ve seen Spike is usually like an investigation into something. Like something that comes up during a sprint that you will need to know to properly plan and don’t want to forget to answer.

The way I've used it, spike also implies higher intensity in addition to a short timebox
