Crypto folks often boil their enthusiasm for the technology down to freedom. Freedom from what, exactly? Authoritarianism, for one. Harmful economic policy is another. 2/

But freedom tech can also protect us against sophisticated hackers who pursue our personal data. That's why US gov officials, after the Salt Typhoon breach, recommended that the public use encrypted messaging—perhaps the most well-known example of freedom tech. 3/

That recommendation was remarkable. Just a decade ago, Jim Comey's FBI warned that "going dark" via encryption was a threat to public safety.  4/
