colors & shapes, shapes & textures put them to paper & we get abstract art 

but are they more than that? 

what’s an abstract mean to you? do they change with feeling — emotions?

unless an artist is hell-bent on creating in the same palette in the same style over & over again, they’re usually creating from some sort of emotion — some sort of visceral “feeling” that often times we don’t understand, but we know how to paint. 

my hard lines in dark reds & deep yellows reflect a sense of of disarray or discomfort — some sort of frustration, whatever it is. cool tones in greens & blues & soft yellows in a landscape-esque abstracts usually come from a place of calm & peace. 

next time you see a portfolio from your favorite artist — pay attention to the colors, the lines, the “way” they create & ask yourself if they are creating from a “period” in their life — or if they are creating from a tumultuous time where maybe their art was their way of processing that negative energy.
