Not many people know this on Farcaster, but I'm an enthusiast and collector of Goodyear welted leather shoes. They're not shoes that you simply throw out. With good care, they will outlive you, but the number of cobblers who know how to service them is dwindling fast.
I think 99%+ of shoes purchased today are ones you simply throw out, so these cobblers don't have much work, and the manufacturers of those types of shoes are either going out of business or shifting their business towards disposable shoes, so you don't even have a large company to step in and help prop up the whole thing.
Swiss watch manufacturers are an interesting case because they seemed to doomed in the 1970s. Why but a mechanical watch when you can buy a digital one for less that tells better times? But the industry, led by Rolex, successfully managed to pivot away from being simply being a means to tell time, to luxury and a fashion statement.
So with a little intervention and new framing, some of those trades can be preserved. :) 0 reply
