You're dealing with hardware, there's way too much risk amongst many stakeholders (suppliers, carriers, distributors, retailers, etc.)...this isn't software where you can just ship it and see. :)

at their scale surely seems impossible, but they could surely do a limited prototype batch and dedicate a small team to run these experiments which they probably run but it never gets out because it can also affect their stock price, no public company can afford launching such a risky hardware piece

It's the fixed costs that are the issue and can't be run by a small team and stealth team :)
