The first Pepsi-Cola was created by Caleb D. Bradham (1866–1934), a pharmacist in New Bern, North Carolina. Hoping to duplicate the recent success of Coca-Cola, Bradham named his sweet cola-flavored carbonated beverage Pepsi-Cola in 1898.

Caleb Davis Bradham was a pharmacist who owned and operated Bradham's Drug Store in New Bern, North Carolina. Like many pharmacists of the time, he created and sold his own medicinal and refreshment beverages.
