In 1980, Ryan Weideman arrived in New York City to pursue a career as a street photographer after earning his MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts. 🧵

After a month in New York City, Weideman’s focus turned to more immediate goals – earning money to pay his rent.

Shortly after moving into a tenement, he met a neighbor who was a taxi driver, which ultimately guided him toward a new career path.

Starting in 1981, he worked as a taxi driver, using his unique perspective to photograph his passengers during his late-night shifts

He dedicated his remaining time to darkroom work, creating black and white prints.  After about six or seven years, he began including himself in his photographs.

This body of work culminated in a 1991 book, In My Taxi: New York After Hours. Weideman retired from driving taxis in 2016 and he still resides in his original Times Square apartment.
