One of my favourite things about German culture compared to France, less rules high individual effort to make society make sense, break the rules only if you want to FAFO France; lots and lots of rules, nobody cares and if you break the rules all is good, unless a rule enforcer arbitrarily doesn’t like your face

Certainly! But I get this vibe in Berlin, that people are aware that living in a nice society comes from making an individual effort to build a small brick in that society, and isn’t achieved by rule of law alone. Whereas in France, the culture is to expect the government to create the perfect society for you, ask for more and more laws, but totally ignore anything that is inconvenient for you, including it it negatively impacts others. I’m also aware I’m living in a microcosm, and may be missing key data, but this has been my experience so far.
