The ethos of open source implies that there is no moat in IP, only in execution. The second part is important though. There must be someone running the software in a specific time and place for it to have value.

It's the same as from moving to land capital ownership, to getting paid for farming the land instead. Still nicer if you can also farm land that you also happen to own

While this might be true in some cases, the difference between code and land is that code is non rivalrous, so it enables positive sum games.
