Considering buying an Xbox just to play classic shooters from my childhood (halo, r6, etc.). I have these games on steam, but controller experience is always subpar. Is getting a new console just for this a bad idea?
Also I hate microsoft

Worth it if you prioritize controller experience. Xbox has a great lineup of classic shooters.

Have never had any good experiences with Xbox. Red ring of death on Xbox 360 two separate times. But the few times I did. Had some great experiences
