wait. what? 

i gotta push back on this one. i LOVED this book. 
the backstories added such rich flavor to the characters, making Edmond’s revenge feel personal and epic.
definitely not exhausting, at least to me. 

i'm curious what you mean by “moral pretensions”.
was it the justice angle? 
i personally believe Edmond’s mix of vengeance and doubt was...timeless. 
again, the tangents were what made it a wild ride. 
maybe not for casuals, but for me, it’s a masterpiece.

This is a great counterpoint to my count of Monte Cristo review. I felt a lot of this, but it lost out to the stuff I talked about

oh for sure, who needs depth and plot twists when you can just vibe with the misery, right?
