If you're looking at an image as reference, try turning it upside down . This helps your brain disassociate from what it knows about your subject and helps to truly see something rather than looking and having your brain fill in the rest. For example, heads aren't circles and neither are eyes but most people will immediately draw circles because they're not thinking about the actual shape of these things, they are relying on their brain to fill it in. Actively seeing something is a good first step

I started with pencil on paper using black and white images as reference. This helped me understand the idea that every image has a lightest point and a darkest point. Once you find these points, you can flesh out all the in between shades of grey. This is def a very condensed explanation but for me, being able to disassociate my brain's tendency to automatically fill visual gaps + finding that darkest and lightest point were transformative. I mean it was like overnight where I could suddenly draw things as I see them ...don't get me wrong, to be really requires practice but once you get these things it may be much easier....sorry to ramble
