Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow, founded Letterboxd in 2011. They designed it as a social networking site for film lovers to share their movie tastes and write reviews. The idea stemmed from their shared passion for films and their desire to create a space for cinephiles to connect and discuss movies.
